9 Essential Tips to Save Fuel While Sailing

By Kanika - 3 February 2025

Having a stress-free holiday is a top priority for all of us when it comes to travelling, and the same applies to sailing. With fuel prices remaining high, paying attention to certain technical aspects can significantly reduce fuel consumption. If you are hiring a boat, here is a list of nine essential tips to help you save fuel while enjoying your trip.

1 – Appropriate Motorisation

If you are constantly operating at full throttle just to reach a normal speed, your boat is likely underpowered. In such cases, a more powerful outboard engine may be necessary. Consider opting for a four-stroke engine, which consumes significantly less fuel.

2 – A Properly Fitted Outboard

Neither too high nor too low, the outboard engine must be positioned at the correct height relative to your boat. Ideally, the anti-ventilation plate should be in line with the bottom of the hull when the trim tab is in a neutral position.

3 – A Well-Adjusted Trim

Positive, negative, or neutral? The correct trim setting depends on your boat, its usage, and especially the sea conditions in which you are sailing. The trim allows you to adjust the engine angle, affecting water flow deviation and the boat’s pitch.

  • If the trim is positive, the boat will pitch upwards—ideal for flat waters or when facing waves from behind.
  • If the trim is negative, the boat will remain flat, which is optimal when sailing upwind, making a turn, or facing waves head-on (take extra care when the boat is heavily loaded).
  • If the trim is neutral, the boat will be slightly raised—a good option for choppy waters.

4 – An Adapted Propeller

One of the key fuel-saving tips is to ensure your propeller is appropriate for your boat, its engine, and your navigation requirements.

5 – A Well-Maintained Engine

Regular oil changes are essential. The frequency depends on the hours of sailing and the engine’s age. Check your boat’s maintenance manual to determine the recommended intervals.

6 – A Clean Hull

Regularly inspect your hull’s condition. Clean and treat it to remove algae and shells that accumulate over time, adding unnecessary weight and increasing fuel consumption.

7 – Managing Weight on Board

Be mindful of your boat’s weight limit. A heavier boat consumes more fuel, so distribute the weight evenly and avoid carrying unnecessary items.

8 – Good Preparation

Proper planning helps avoid unnecessary detours and backtracking, which waste fuel. Always carry a map and/or GPS for efficient navigation.

9 – Smooth Navigation

Lastly, sudden manoeuvres and abrupt acceleration can drastically increase fuel consumption. Maintain a steady speed and avoid jerky movements to conserve fuel and ensure a smoother experience for your crew.
