Very nice cruising area, with many anchorages, from the small cove to the large sandy beach. The water is incredibly beautiful and warm in August, there are a few people so it is sometimes complicated in the smallest coves but overall it's okay. We went as far as Menorca and frankly, it's worth it, the island is very wild. Lots of dolphins during the crossing.

An area with strong variable winds and few and very crowded anchorages. The less popular west coast undoubtedly offers more varied landscapes and less crowded coves.

Faultless experience - many thx Lolo for being such a great, relaxed skipper. A lovely boat (Odyssey 48) - far better value than the other boat we took out with a different company, and none of the aggro that we have had with them either. Many thx!

Laura was fantastic, great communication, a lovely boat and she looked after us so well! She took us to really nice places and let us really enjoy the time how we wanted, but always offering advice and ideas if we wanted them. She was also great to talk to and we’ll definitely be back next time we are in Mallorca!

On arrival we met Lorenzo the captain who spoke perfect English and was a great host. The boat was clean with treats laid out on the table for us. The day was spent visiting various calas , swimming and eating (we took our own sandwiches). Plenty of soft chilled drinks were available for us. A great day out and highly recommended.

Renting a boat in Palma

Palma is one of the prime cruising destinations not just in Spain, but in all of Europe. One of the main cities to hire a boat in Majorca, along with Formentera, Menorca, make up the main attraction for sailing enthusiasts visiting the Balearic Islands. It looks like this city in Mallorca was created by nature for the sole purpose of sailing. It has multiple anchorages, secluded coves, and many natural harbours – all features that sailing enthusiasts look for in their dream boating destination. You might also want to hire a sailboat in Majorca or even maybe hire a catamaran in Majorca.

In Palma, you will find no shortage of activities. Experience the Spanish way of life in the hilltop villages, visit the wonderful orchards of oranges, enjoy the hidden beaches, and time travel by feasting the eyes on the stunning Gothic architecture. This holiday city is a lot more fun for tourists who love boating. That being said, Palma is many times more beautiful when seen from the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. If your main destination is Palma and you're looking to hire a boat, you'll definitely find what you're looking for. The waters bordering the city are full of boats of all shapes and sizes. It has some of the best and most highly professional services that you can find when renting a boat in the Balearic Islands.

When to Sail in Palma?

The city of Palma enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, which is a subtropical climate characterized by hot and dry summers and humid but mild winters.  While other parts of Mallorca and its fellow Balearic Islands are known to experience strong north wind that blows over the Mediterranean, Palma escapes this problem, largely due to the mountainous ranges. The city receives moderate to heavy rainfall from November to April. The remaining months get almost no rainfall, leaving Palma hot and dry, as mentioned above.

The summers are hot, but not unbearable, thanks to the cooling effect of the Mediterranean waters. The summer is at its peak in August when the temperature reaches the maximum of 40℃. Again due to the surrounding sea, Palma never experiences sub-zero temperature winters. Palma witnesses its peak tourism season from April to June, September, and October. Even though these are the biggest months in demand, keep in mind that they will also bring the most amount of tourists so plan accordingly. If you want to avoid the crowds, be sure to plan outside these months.

Cost and Availability of Hiring a Boat in Palma

When it comes to hiring a boat in Palma, you'll have a wide selection due to the popularity of the region. If you choose a catamaran charter or choose a motor boat, you'll find something in your budget. For yacht hires in Palma, you can expect to pay an average of 450€ for catamarans and 350€ per day for sailboats. If you are planning to hire a motor boat, it is best to sort by type of activity. With a large number of boats, you'll have motor boats that are best for a day out to see the coast and others for water sports. Either way, keep in mind that the prices will fluctuate depending on the season you choose to visit.

For weekly charters in Palma, boats begin to get booked up by November for the next year. Due to the high demand, it is best to look as soon as possible.

Do you need a license to hire a boat in Palma?

In order to hire a boat in Palma, you will have to follow the national laws of Spain. There are two cases in which you will be asked to present a valid license. If you are renting a motor boat with more than 15hp and 4 meters in length or if it is a sailboat bigger than 5 meters in size. In addition to having a license, you will be required to fill out a nautical CV that showcases your previous experience in regard to what boats you've captained and what waters you've sailed.

If you need more experience or want nothing to do with the controls, hire a boat with a skipper and only worry about the beautiful locations you will go to.

Practical Information for Sailing in Palma?

When getting to Palma, you'll have several choices of airlines operating flights in and out of the city. Palma and other parts of Mallorca are served by the Son Sant Joan Airport, which is the third-largest airport in Spain and just 8km from Palma. The Balearic Islands, which also includes the city of Palma, receive tourists almost throughout the year and the Son Sant Joan Airport serves more than a million passengers every year. There are several domestic flights connecting Palma to other Spanish cities (in the region and mainland) such as Seville, Menorca, Ibiza, Valencia, Madrid, and Barcelona.

Holidaymakers could use a bus or cab to commute from the airport to the accommodation. From the airport, the bus service will take you to Palma town centre and Playa de Palma; check out the bus routes and timetable for more information. Alternatively, tourists can also hire a cab to travel to their accommodations.

While you, like the scores of tourists visiting Palma, want to spend as much time as possible on the boat exploring the Mediterranean, there is plenty to do and experience the inland as well. Tourists can partake in the simple and relaxed life of the Spanish people. The holidaymakers would love the friendly attitude and hospitality of the local people that can be sampled in the many cafes and restaurants. If you love sports, the opportunity for water sports is aplenty. In addition, you can also enjoy tennis, golf, and horse riding.
