What to do if the boat breaks down while sailing?

In the event of a failure at sea, safety remains the priority. Remain calm and follow these steps to ensure your well-being and the one of your passengers :

  • Check the essentials points:

    • Make sure the throttle is in neutral position. If it is not, the boat will not start.

    • Check that the circuit breaker is properly connected. Its absence can prevent the boat from starting.

  • Call for help:

    • If it's an emergency, secure yourself and call the CROSS at 196 from your phone or, on VHF channel 16 (for France). They will be able to coordinate the rescue if necessary.

    • Contact the owner as soon as possible to inform them. They will be able to give you instructions and additional information specific to your location and the boat to take the necessary measures.

  • Managing the situation at sea :

    • In the presence of swell, equip the passengers, especially children, with life jackets.

    • If the boat has broken down and is drifting, anchor it if the depth allows it. This will prevent from dangerous approaches to obstacles and facilitate the intervention of the rescue services. 

  • Reassure and maintain order on board :

    • Reassure the people on board to avoid any panic.

    • Keep the boat in order and easily accessible to facilitate any towing operation by professionals.
